Is it just me, or is this scenario highly unlikely? I don't see how it is possible for a 7 punched over a 6 to show remnants of the 6 on top of the 7. Maybe someone here can explain it?
I am looking at pictures of other overdates and I dont see anything like that. Look at the pictures of the 1880-CC overdates in the Morgan Dollar section here, for example.
Here are two photos of the 1887/6 Morgan, one with the 7 superimposed over the 6. There is no remnant of the 6 visible on the 7 in this instance. Only to the right in the field.
